All of today’s images are etchings by French artist Gustave Doré. Doré’s 200+ Bible illustrations are some of the most brilliant interpretations of these classic stories, skillfully executed by a true master. Images are: Jesus and the Woman of Samaria; David and Goliath; Jesus Healing the Sick; Isaac Blessing Jacob; Jesus Walking on the Water; and the header image is Samson Slaying the Lion.

Thanks for another great post, after reading it I ordered “The Dore Bible Illustrations” from amazon. I want to be able to look at the whole image without scrolling and study the details. I feel like you are my guide to Biblical art. This is a good start to the week and we get another post next week!
That’s great that you ordered the book, Mark, and thank you! Doré wanted to be known as a great painter, and as far as I’m concerned, he is. But his engravings are so beautiful that I really hope he’s happy to simply be remembered as a great ARTIST — one who was immensely talented in a number of different mediums. In many ways, I think that’s even more of an honour than going down in history as just another great “painter”.

Thank you, Dan! Doré is one of my favourite artists, and as I was putting this post together, wondering what artwork I would use, I finally realized that Doré had provided me with over 200 Bible illustrations to choose from! I’m a big fan of colour, but I also feel like a collection of stark black and white/grayscale images has an impact all its own — one that I think pairs beautifully with these particular verses.
