Happy Squirrel Appreciation Day! :D
No, seriously, it’s Squirrel Appreciation Day. It’s a real thing, I promise. I know, I know — I was really excited the first time I learned about it too!
Love their furry little bodies, their tiny little hands, and their bushy little tails.
Mhmm, I know what some of you are thinking… “they’re rodents”. Pft, semantics! Yes, technically squirrels are rodents. But they’re just so CUTE! :D
“Rats are rodents too, Wendy. Rats aren’t cute. Rats are rats.”
Exactly! Rats are rats, squirrels are squirrels, and squirrels are super cute. Yes, they CAN be incredibly destructive, but how — I ask you — HOW do you stay mad at a face like this?
I can’t. I just can’t. I buy them pounds and pounds of peanuts, and in the fall, I pick up acorns from outside the public library in town. I give them dinner scraps, and sometimes bring them fat from the butcher shop. I let them sleep in my sauna. I let them jump onto me, and sometimes they get so overly excited by how much my finger looks like a peanut that they bite me. And even when I’m in the middle of painting and it’s -30ºC, I get up, open the window (icy blast to the face and all!) and feed them.
Because I don’t have a dog, a cat, or fish. I have squirrels.
And along with my wild chickadees, I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.
In the last ten years, I have taken a little over 500 squirrel photos. That’s not an estimate — I counted them while I was collecting for this post. Now, at first that seemed like a lot, but it’s really not. That’s only 50 photos a year. Or 4 photos per month. That’s nothing! Honestly, I took 12 just the other day. So I thought there would be more. There should be more. And I will rectify this situation before next year’s Squirrel Appreciation Day, I assure you.
For your sakes, I really did try to keep the photo count in this post to a minimum. There are 56. That’s my minimum. It was very difficult to stop at that number, let me tell you. So don’t say I never did you any favours!
Squirrels. *sighs* Man, I love squirrels. Sorry, it’s a sickness. Maybe something I contracted from all those squirrel bites over the years.
Please enjoy my 56 photos of squirrels. These are some of my absolute favourite shots taken over the past 10 years. I’m so sorry.
No, I’m not. ;)
Happy Squirrel Appreciation Day, everyone!
