This is what the LORD says – He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

~ Isaiah 43:1-2

A comforting verse. But so much more so when you understand it. Remember what we talked about before — two sides to wisdom…

Waters: Peoples, multitudes, nations and languages
Sea: The sea of humanity.
Rivers: The voice of any ideology that feeds the sea of humanity; all waters run into the sea.
Fire: The fire of God is the Truth revealed. Remember that the Word of God is a double-edged sword: When it cuts, it either delivers or it condemns. It reveals righteousness or wickedness.

While we are here, shackled in this mortal coil, we have no choice but to live in the world. And it can be very difficult. But the Lord has not abandoned us. He walks right beside us, at all times. All He has ever asked is that we acknowledge and confess Him — Truth and Love made visible in mortal form, Jesus, God Himself in flesh, the Christ — and love one another. All the psalms and prophets are summed up in these two commands.

And if we accept God’s grace and God’s salvation, there is nothing in this world for us to fear. Joshua 1:9 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

When we obey the Lord’s commands, and walk in His path, then when we pass through the waters of humanity, He will be right there with us. When we pass through the rivers of wicked ideologies, ideologies which tear down instead of build up; which promote death and not life; which destroy instead of create; the Lord will hold us steadfast and make sure that lies and falsehood will not sweep over us, causing us to drown in the cesspool of sin.

And when we walk through the fire of God, when the Truth is revealed, when we hear the message that Jesus is Lord — and preach it ourselves to others — the message will not harm us. The Sword will deliver us, not condemn us. The flames of God’s wrath will not set us ablaze and burn us to cinders, but will instead cleanse, refine, and purify us.

So fear not, the Lord has redeemed His children, those who hear His voice and come when He calls. Remember, Jesus stands at the door and knocks. But it’s up to us to let Him in.

When we walk with the Lord, we truly never walk alone.
